Keith Miller:
The Power of Atonement
In Acts 2:21 it says, "And it shall come to pass that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved!"
Now that word "saved" there is "sozo" in the Greek. There's power in this word because it not only talks about the saving of the spirit, but it also means salvation from disease and deliverance from iniquity. The Bible in this passage says whoever calls on the name of the Lord can be saved, and "saved" or sozo literally means "to come into wholeness of body, mind, and spirit." I tell you what, we need that kind of revival in our land!
If you look in Mark 2:1, Jesus was in Capernaum, and He preached the Word because He wanted them to understand what was about to happen. While He was preaching in this house, all of a sudden they lowered this man down from the ceiling; they had ripped off the roof so he could get near Jesus! How would you like for your house to be so anointed with His healing presence that you get your roof ripped off? I mean, I would take it in a minute! If my house had such a healing flow of the Lord that people were coming from everywhere ripping open the roof, I'd have to move out and just say, "Well, just have the house!"
But, you know what I'm saying. Aren't you ready to see it? But they ripped it open and they lowered him in, and you know what He said to him? He didn't say, "Be healed." Let's look at this. Go to Mark 2:3-12, because this is going to equip you to believe that when you pray for people, "saved and unsaved," that when they get saved, they can also get healing, too. Look at this:
Then they came to Him, bringing a paralytic who was carried by four men. And when they could not come near Him because of the crowd, they uncovered the roof where He was. So when they had broken through, they let down the bed on which the paralytic was lying.
When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, "Son, your sins are forgiven you."
And some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, "Why does this Man speak blasphemies like this? Who can forgive sins but God alone?"
But immediately, when Jesus perceived in His spirit that they reasoned thus within themselves, He said to them, "Why do you reason about these things in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, 'Your sins are forgiven you,' or to say, 'Arise, take up your bed and walk'? But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins," – He said to the paralytic, "I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house."
Immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went out in the presence of them all, so that all were amazed and glorified God, saying, "We never saw anything like this [before]!"
They saw some "first things," didn't they? Did you notice that Jesus said with the forgiveness of sins came healing? Right there, Jesus did it!
The atonement is spoken of in Isaiah 53; we "quote and claim" this passage often, and we see here that Jesus gave His life on the Cross. But in this passage we see that there's healing at the Cross, too – physical healing. There are so many other Scriptures about sozo. How about when Jesus healed the blind person? He said to him, "You're sins are forgiven. Now you are made whole." And his eyes opened up!
Salvation is more than just saying a little prayer. It's literally the atonement, or coming out of the old way and coming into His way. It's coming into His wholeness. This is what the word sozo means: "to make whole, heal, or be whole; to save, keep safe and sound; to rescue from danger or destruction; to save a suffering one from persistent suffering, from disease; to make one well, to heal, restore health; to save from evils which have struck the reception of the Messiah's deliverance." And you have the power of sozo in your mouth! We're to proclaim, "You can be saved! Whoever calls on the name of the Lord can be saved!"
Look up the word sozo and just begin to dive into the Word! It's incredible! Everywhere He cured incurable disease, He said, "I make you whole," and "whole" is the word sozo. And it's the same root word as "salvation" in Acts 2:21 that I mentioned earlier. It's also the same word for "saved" that we use all the time in Romans 10:13, "For whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved."
Have a blessed and awesome day in the Lord.
Many blessings to you,
Keith Miller
