A report on THE CALL DC gathering, Washington DC, September 2, 2000

Note: I have not attempted to write an exhaustive article on THE CALL because I'm attaching multiple links so you can read from various points of view--what others experienced.

THE ELIJAH LIST (Washington DC) --It was no picnic Saturday, on the grounds famous for the great Civil Rights gatherings, speeches and demonstration. The Mall, the grassy area between the great Capitol Building, where the nation's laws are made, and the Washington Monument, where the first President of the United States is honored, was the site for approximately 400,000 youth, parents and family members, gathered for what was called "The CallDC."

My nineteen-year old daughter and I flew in Thursday night so we could arrive a day early, check out the site and pick up a press pass. Within minutes of our arrival, a nicely dressed woman introduced herself and asked Tawny and me for an on-camera interview. I had first thought she was part of THE CALL, but she turned out to be from the local CBS News Program in DC. I was pleased that her main focus was finding out why a 19-year old and her father would come together for this and she wanted to know what my daughter, Tawny, expected to get out of our relationship by this event. Though we never got to see the news broadcast, I was pleased that Tawny was proud to be with her Dad. She told that reporter that this was an "awesome experience" for her.

NO PICNIC

I started by saying that this event was "no picnic." It was no picnic because most of those in attendance were fasting and praying, not only for the Nation's Capital, but for the United States of America. And not for the country alone, but for church.

The leaders who organized this gathering, among the most prominent of them, Che Ahn and Lou Engle, pastors from Pasadena's Harvest Rock Church and Coach Bill McCartney, president of Promise Keepers-- demonstrated from the beginning that this was a time to fast, pray, and repent for the sins of the Church. Perhaps the most quoted scripture of the day was:

2 Chr 7:14-15 14 "If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 15 Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place.

ABOUT LAYING DOWN OUR LIVES

This gathering was about the people of God, Believers in Jesus Christ. There was no railing against the President, or against Congress or even against sinners who refuse to turn to Christ. Rather, this was a sober time to contemplate the sins of those who call Jesus Christ the Savior--- how we have capitulated our responsibility of fulfilling THE CALL to go into all the World to Preach the Gospel, to live Holy Lives, and to be willing to lay down our own lives and agendas for the cause of Christ.

A MORE INTENSE CALL

Having attended "Stand in the Gap," a gathering of perhaps over a million men on the same location in 1997, I had no idea what to expect. Would this be a great disappointment compared to that? Would the numbers in attendance be very small and depressing? I was NOT disappointed. While there were less participants, there were still HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of people, the vast majority of whom were youth. I hadn't expected quite this large a percentage of youth. These were a serious and committed group--which is an understatement. I would say without hesitation that this was a more INTENSE "CALL," even than the STAND IN THE GAP group. Why the enemy has attempted to obliterate much of this generation of youth through "Roe V. Wade" is now more clear to me than ever. This generation has a solemness and resolve that I have not seen as a boomer.

IT'S ABOUT REVOLUTION

With humbling ourselves as people and repenting of our wicked ways as the main backdrop, the most common word of the day, mentioned-- perhaps no less than a HUNDRED times was "REVOLUTION!" Those who attended, wondering just what "The Call" was, went away with the clear and uncompromised message that this was indeed a CALL TO REVOLUTION! Both for the Boomer generation, but even especially for the next generation--the children of the Boomers.

This was a CALL to no more business as usual. A call to repentance for our allowing fear of man and compromise to keep us from the Lord's best. A call for revolution to change anything and everything in every way to make the Lord first, to bring souls to Jesus Christ, and be willing--even to die for the Lord in the process

THE BEGINNING

We arrived long before daylight, around 5:30 am and were amazed to find the stage "alive" with many praising and worshipping Jesus. A gorgeous well-lit and colorful stage with dancers energetically giving Glory to the Lord. As the sun came up and the day got underway, Native Dancers and a large team of 50-60 men and women, dressed in white outfits took the stage at the same time. The day was ushered in with the blowing of shofars and Native American Worshippers and Dancers in full First Nations regalia. It was the right way to initiate this CALL. What better way than to honor the cultural worship of Native Americans, the First people of this nation and the Jewish People--God's first CHOSEN NATION?

AUSTRALIAN WORSHIPPERS

About 80 Australians who each paid about $3,000 of their own money to travel to this event-- took the stage at one point to help us Americans to repent and prophesy LIFE to the United States. Dressed in bright red shirts and hats that were distinctly Australian, I was very moved to think of THE NATIONS and how we are all interconnected with one another in the Body. As the Scripture states,

1 Cor 12:26-27 "If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it."

SOMETHING HAPPENED IN THE SPIRIT -- IN THE HEAVENS

I have never been more aware than during this day, that something happened in the Heavenlies. While we prayed over our own sins, the sins of the nation, but mainly the sins of the church, I KNEW that heaven was opening up and that things would break loose and break forth as a result. This was 400,000 sold-out, zealous, passionate Believers caught up in the serious business of truly humbling themselves. When you see some of the photos (see http://www.elijahlist.com/call.htm below), you will get that sense.

In one aspect, "you had to be there" to see it, and yet, we will ALL benefit from this event, because it was done FOR all. The Lord is well aware that the majority of those who wanted to be there could not be there. Even so, the entire church will see the results, I believe.

"Leading in a passionate prayer for America's political leaders, Lou Engle directed the young people and parents to stretch out their hands toward the face of the Capitol Building. As the roar of these revolutionary prayers began to rise up, I witnessed a spiritual release displacing evil entities who have exercised squatters rights to this territory. Only on rare occasions has the Lord allowed me to actually see the demonic realm. It is not something I care to visualize, even though I am very aware of its reality.

But on this occasion, I saw our prayers sending hundreds of demons scurrying for cover. They scrambled to the Capitol Dome, bracing themselves by grabbing hold of its many columns and perching on window ledges of its four or five levels, glaring out at this adolescent army with red glowing eyes. Fearful and trembling, they listened to the impassioned, unified prayers of hundreds of thousands of young people asking the Lord to bring His forgiveness to our nation, its leaders and heal our land, heal the land with His unsurpassed love and blessings; a love that displaces demonic strongholds that have occupied places we, as a nation, have left void of God's righteous rule.

Say among the nations, The Lord Reigns. The world is firmly established, it cannot be moved; he will judge the peoples with equity . . . He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples in truth. Psalm 96: 10, 13"

THE TURNING POINT FOR ME--- HE KISSED HIS SON'S FEET!!

I (Steve Shultz) hit my most profound moment as Coach Bill McCartney, founder of Promise Keepers came to speak. McCartney is about as masculine as men get. A professional football coach for most of his career, he is not immune to what it takes to be tough and to let people know who is in charge.

Never have I seen a man so able to obey the Lord and humble himself in front of other men. Not that this is about McCartney for it is surely about the Lord and HIS ministry to his people - the ministry of a servant and yet ruler over all.

WASHING OUR CHILDREN'S FEET

Coach McCartney brought his son up, a grown but young man (whose age was not stated) and father took a pitcher of water and a basin to wash his son's feet. He did this as a symbol and reality of the boomer generations' need to humble ourselves to our children and to this generation--to repent for the "generation" that we "handed them" - full of all it's permissiveness, lack of zeal for the things of the Lord and our lack of respect for authority. As he washed his son's feet, he knelt low and kissed his son's feet - first his right foot, and then his left.

I began to break at what I was seeing. In the Spirit, demons' hold on both generations began to be broken - all the more. Not just for Coach McCartney and his son but for me and the rest of my boomer generation.

AS I HAVE DONE, SO OUGHT YOU TO DO

As Christ washed His disciple's feet, He said we ought also to wash one another's feet. As Coach washed his son's feet, and kissed them, we were then, as Fathers invited to kiss the feet of our children. First we were to kiss ONE foot for our own son or daughter. Then we were to kiss the OTHER foot for the unborn children that were never to experience what God had for them in this generation--because abortion took them away.

KISSING THE FEET OF MY DAUGHTER

My daughter was lying down on the grass on her back with her feet on the ground. I came over to her and kissed first one foot and then I kissed the other. By this time, tears were flowing. My daughter and I have a wonderful relationship but this was more than I could take. I was humbling myself on purpose - before my daughter. Something I would NEVER have done had the Lord not presented this opportunity.

Then we were invited to look into our son or daughter's eyes and tell them what we saw in them for their lives. I couldn't even get it out without the sobs. Why, oh Lord, have we waited so long to humble ourselves before our children. I received a prophetic word five years ago that I would weep over my children. Now I could see that the prophecy was beginning to be fulfilled over this one 19-year old. Lord, How will I do something similar with my other children? Yet I know the Lord will make the way.

Lord, why don't we humble ourselves more often? And Lord, is this what you did for us, humbling yourself as a servant, totally emptying yourself of all that you had a right to, in order to wait upon humanity? I can hardly contain the thought of this kind of love. God, help me to understand the depths of it.

I asked Tawny to write out any thoughts she had about THE CALL--and what she got from it. Here is what she gave me. (Tawny, by the way, works for THE ELIJAH LIST full time)

A CALL TO RECONCILIATION

"I think one of the things that stood out most to me was the reconciliation of "Generation X" and the "Baby Boomers." I was always frustrated that there seemed to be such a gap there, that there seemed to be so much misunderstanding on both parts. Even though there were so many excellent words about how God will use the younger generation and how the older generation is not discarded or forgotten and will be given more ministry, I eventually became frustrated. We needed those words each to our own generation, but after a while, I began to feel that even those began to draw a line between us. It felt as though there were now two separate ministries. As though Elijah and Elisha are trying to work apart from each other. We, NOT two separate groups "youth" and "adults," but HIS CHILDREN, are called to work together for God, not separately for God. We are all called to the same gospel. As one body.

And so, with that, it was the most incredible thing to look around and see thousands upon thousands reconciling! As each generation clung to each other and cried, the enemy was DEFEATED! I just know that a huge battle was won! And many more will be won because we will work together as one, unified, LARGE army of God rather than working against each other or in two smaller armies. I can't even begin to explain! It was so freeing! To look upon multitudes of people defeating the enemy simply by tears and hugs. Much ground was taken back and much intercession was made. God's presence was THICK-- He was there with much love and pleasure!

We then proceeded to cry out together for revival of our nation for a revolution. After we prayed and worshipped, it thundered and began to rain BUCKETS for the last two hours of The Call! It felt as though, in God's pleasure, he was crying tears of joy over His children and washing away the sins of our nation on behalf of our own tears and cries. How wonderful it was to be forgiven and to dance and twirl in His tears of love!! "He prays to God and finds favor with him, he sees God's face and shouts for joy; he is restored by God to his righteous state." (Job 33:26) I feel we must celebrate!! We have the victory! And we must pray for God's continued favor and our continued unification in the Body of Christ and then I can't wait to see what God will do NOW!!!"

About Rachel Scott's (one of the martyr's of the Columbine tragedy) father for instance, who came to appeal to the crowd that Rachel's death was not in vain--that the Lord had used her death to affect many hundreds of thousands of youth in American and around the world. How powerful!!
