From the desk of Steve Shultz:
Being a prophetic ministry, we've been asked many "prophetic" questions from our readers over the years. These questions range from simple questions on how to hear God's voice to how to enter into the deep revelatory realms of God. From time-to-time, I've answered some of the most commonly asked questions from readers. A few of those questions and answers are featured below.
But first, take a look at some of our very own ElijahList resources including our brand new ElijahSeasons Calendar!

"Debugging the Prophetic: Questions and Answers with Steve Shultz"
The Ways God "Works" Out His Plans
Q. If God knows the future and tells me, why doesn't He just change the future rather than ask me to partner with Him and prophesy against the devil's plan shown to me?
A. God, being the first and perfect parent with the first and perfect children and "couple," knew ahead of time that Adam and Eve would fall in sin.
We know this because the Scripture teaches us that Christ was slain before the foundation of the World. Instead of stopping the sin - and changing the future - He planned to work with mankind to solve the problem.
In other words, before the creation of mankind, the plan for Christ to be crucified was already set in place and considered a "done deal." It is no different with you and the prophecies you give.
We would waste time trying to figure God out in this area or trying to make sense of it - because it doesn't make "human" sense.
It is just one of His ways.
I have a dear Jewish friend, David, from Nashville, who thinks in ways that put my brain on tilt. See if you are challenged by this deep Jewish Christian thinking.
David puts it something like this: "God said He would make your path straight. He promised it. So when every Christian in the world makes many wrong turns, all God has to do is rotate the universe a few billion times a day to make our paths straight." And all without breaking a sweat.
God Wants Us To Know About HIS WAYS. Rather than Always Changing the Future, He Usually Partners With Us To Do that Very Thing
If God was going to always change the future (and I believe He SOMETIMES does change it), He would have just destroyed satan and his minions before casting them down to earth. But since He didn't, we know something about the way God works. He works out His plan rather than just forcing us to obey or die instantly. He allows mistakes and then He fixes them for those who love Him (see Romans 8:28).
Prophesying Changes Future History
In the early Church, prophesying was so common that we even have a reference about Philip who had four daughters that prophesied (see Acts 21:9). That's all it says. It was just a common thing in those days. They prophesied. God knows our prophesying changes things, including the future. He leaves in that Bible reference, yet explains it no further.
So we should all do the same thing - continue to prophesy breakthroughs for people.
Why Can it Take a Lifetime for Some Prophecies to Come to Pass?
Q. Why can it take an entire lifetime for some prophetic words to come to pass? Can we place our own stumbling blocks in the way of prophetic fulfillment of a word, causing a prophecy to be delayed or even entirely cancelled?
A. This is probably among the most common questions we're asked. I can remember times while I was doing prophetic ministry - and was also receiving words from others - time after time, none of them happened when I thought they should. I didn't want to hear even one more prophetic word, because none of them seemed to be coming to pass.
The fact remains, from Old Testament times until the Messiah came, some words took thousands of years to come to pass.
Now, let's get simple. Some words are meant to take a lifetime, because it causes a lifetime of faith. Other words are meant to come to pass within minutes.
That's why the Scripture says:
"The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise(s), as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance." 2 Peter 3:9
Let's be honest. This Scripture is pregnant with meaning. This last passage was written because we needed to understand this "Way" God works, and that others feel just as we do.
It also says God is patient with His promises. I'm glad, aren't you?
And finally, God says that "repentance" is one reason He seems to act slowly, simply because He's waiting for repentance from many. Also good.
So, to bottom-line it, sometimes God expects for some words to take years, some words just minutes, other prophecies must be prayed in, and some - He's just waiting for more repentance. And He seems to refuse to give us a set formula for it.
How Can We Discern the Accuracy of Prophetic Dates and Details?
Q. Is it dangerous to give specific dates in a prophetic word? What if the word prophesied by a prophet does not happen on the date given? Should I ignore all future prophetic words from that prophet and not take them seriously from then on?
A. Even as you're reading this, God is training thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of intercessors, prophetic people, prophets, and seers to hear HIS voice more and more clearly as the days and years go by.
The implications of this are not that hard to grasp, since we are told that it is God's intention to move us each from "Glory to Glory." This means many are learning how to get dates right - but are not "there" yet. This also means that even if you don't get dates correctly now, you WILL get them more correct more often as you learn and are willing to risk. And so will other prophetic people around you. Having said that, you must also know that there are many who have gone through this process and who get exact dates "spot on."
The main way to know if someone gets a date right is to test the exact date that was given.
There is a problem though. Using only this method would have made many Old Testament prophets considered to be false prophets. As it is, many of them WERE considered to be false, even without dates. For instance, the Messiah was predicted to come from a virgin. He was prophesied to be born in Bethlehem, yet also to be called "out of Egypt." He was said to be the ONE who would sit on the throne of David.
Many of those things took hundreds of years to be discovered as truth. And many today (among the Jewish people, for instance) still believe those prophecies to be NOT yet fulfilled.
So, if you add dates to any prophetic equation, it's even more difficult to be proven right - even if the word IS right.
For Instance, My "Birthday"
Years ago, a prophet told me that, on my birthday, God would give to me exactly what I asked for that year. I needed finances badly, so that's what I asked for. My birthday came
and went - but nothing. Two months later, I woke up hearing the birthday song in my head. On the radio later that day, I heard that this was the exact date of the origination of the "Happy Birthday" song. "Hmm," I thought, "Maybe this is the day my prophecy comes true, though it's not my own birthday!"
And so it was. I headed to my post office box to pick up my mail - the same mail that rarely included money. Suddenly, on the day I woke up with "Happy Birthday to You" playing in my head - which was the same day that song originated - I opened my mail to find a $5,000 check - the largest gift I'd ever been given up to that time in my life!
You tell me if dates come true! The answer would have to be "yes" and "no" on this story. It did come true, but only in the way God intended it to come true.
My advice is to listen to prophets and test their accuracy over a long period of time - not just the dates they've given you - but the other details of the prophecy as well. Then also be open to alternate meanings of dates. If you listen to many prophets, you'll eventually decide on the few prophets you are most comfortable to accept a word from when they give an exact date. The others, just pray about, but refrain from judging those who are still learning and practicing their prophetic gift.
