ON CAPITOL HILL THIS WEEK

Sara Ballenger, Burt Roberts

Note from Steve Shultz, Moderator, THE ELIJAH LIST

There are many intercessors on this list. Perhaps even a majority of the list. Since today I'm focusing (with the ELIJAH LIST) on the gravity of things going on in Washington D.C. I felt to put out this call to Intercession by two people who send out this weekly report/call to intercede - "ON CAPITOL HILL THIS WEEK." Please write to them if you want to receive their weekly reports and prayer list:

Date: Sat, 16 Jan 1999

From: Burt Roberts BRoberts@aol.com or: chpp@patriot.net

Writers and editors: Sara Ballenger and Burt Roberts PO Box 5152/Herndon, VA 20172-1970 703-709-5473 (voice)/703-709-0759 (fax) 703-560-2470 (voice/fax) chpp@patriot.net (e-mail)

ON CAPITOL HILL THIS WEEK Vol VI, No. 3: January 18-22, 1999 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it (Isa 55:11).

1. THE TRIAL OF IMPEACHMENT

In the 6 years that we have been serving as watchmen on Capitol Hill, we have never witnessed a time such as this. At this moment, all three branches of government legislative, judicial, and executive are tied up in the process of JUDGMENT. Every day, the Senate's business is to serve as "triers," as Sen. Tom Harkin noted. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court is holding court in the Senate; and the President is engaged in the legal battle of his life. THE SPIRIT OF JUDGMENT HAS NOW ENTERED THE LAND.

Knowing that we are in a very unusual season in government, we as intercessors continue to "press in" to hear what the Lord would say to us today, and to know how to position ourselves before His throne on behalf of this nation. We submit three focus points to you for intercession:

a. LET US CONTINUE TO PRAY MUCH IN THE SPIRIT, KNOWING THAT THE LORD DESIRES TO TURN ALL OF THIS TO THE GOOD. "For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; he will save us" (Isa 33:22).

b. Please meditate upon the story of King Manasseh in 2 Chronicles 33. Note particularly verse 12: "And when he was in affliction, he besought the LORD his God, and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers." King Manasseh then went on to tear down the altars of the idols in the land, and to restore true worship to the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. PRAY THAT, JUST AS KING MANASSEH DID, PRESIDENT CLINTON WOULD RESPOND TO THIS CRUSHING EXPERIENCE IN TRUE REPENTANCE, WITH FRUIT THAT FOLLOWS.

c. FINALLY, PRAY THAT ANY SCHEMES OF MAN DESIGNED TO CIRCUMVENT OR ABROGATE THE JUDGMENT AT HAND WOULD BE QUICKLY EXPOSED AND THWARTED. PRAY THAT THE WILL OF GOD AND NOT THE PLANS OF MAN WOULD PREVAIL AT THIS APPOINTED HOUR, SO THAT THE DESTINY OF THE NATION WOULD BE FULFILLED. "Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven" (Matt 6:10).

2. PRESIDENT TO DELIVER THE STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS

On Tuesday, January 19, President Clinton will deliver the annual State of the Union Address to a Joint Session of Congress. Although the Constitution requires that the President submit this report to the Congress annually, it does not state that it be in the form of a speech. Instead, a written report would suffice. Given the fact that President Clinton is currently being tried in the Senate on charges of possible criminal activity, many public officials are questioning the wisdom of him personally delivering this address. PRAY FOR WISDOM. Scripture: They also that erred in spirit shall come to understanding, and they that murmured shall learn doctrine (Isa 29:24).

3. THE RE-NOMINATION OF JAMES HORMEL

Throughout last year, we prayed over President Clinton's nomination of homosexual activist James Hormel to serve as U.S. Ambassador to Luxembourg. In answer to prayer, and because of homosexuality, this nomination was never admitted to the floor of the Senate for a confirming vote. But this battle is not over. One of the first moves of the Clinton administration under the new Congress was once again the re-nomination of James Hormel to the same position. LET US REMAIN STEADFAST IN PRAYER, THAT ONLY CANDIDATES OF GODLY CHARACTER WOULD BE ALLOWED TO REPRESENT OUR NATION OVERSEAS IN AMBASSADORIAL POSITIONS. PRAY, TOO, THAT SENATOR LOTT WOULD BE "BOLD AS A LION" REGARDING THIS ISSUE. Scripture: But the righteous are bold as a lion (Prov 28:1b).

4. HOUSE COMMITTEE WRAPS UP CHINAGATE PROBE

The House Select Committee on U.S. National Security and Military/Commercial Concerns with the People's Republic of China, headed by Rep. Chris Cox, has completed its extensive investigation and submitted its final report to the Speaker of the House and the Minority Leader. Insiders report that the findings are devastating and lead to the conclusion that the President has damaged national security by allowing the sale of military secrets to Communist China. As a result, the Chinese have developed highly accurate, long-range missiles which are targeted against American cities. AS THE LEADERSHIP OF THE HOUSE MUST DECIDE HOW TO RESPOND TO THE COMMITTEE'S REPORT, PRAY FOR THEIR WISDOM. PRAY, TOO, FOR SUPERNATURAL PROTECTION FOR OUR COUNTRY. Scripture: For with God nothing shall be impossible (Luke 1:37).

5. H.R. 220: FREEDOM AND PRIVACY RESTORATION ACT OF 1999

This month, Rep. Ron Paul introduced this bill on the floor of the House in order to curb the growing tendency of the federal bureaucracy to maintain surveillance records on our citizens. If passed, this act would prohibit the federal government from using Social Security numbers as personal identifiers, and would avert the creation of any national identification cards for the purpose of monitoring, overseeing, or investigating citizens. Although the deadline for the decision on this bill is at the end of this session of Congress, staffers urge that opinions about it be voiced now. PRAY THAT THE PUBLIC WOULD BECOME AWARE OF THE EROSION OF OUR PRIVACY RIGHTS AND OF THIS LEGISLATIVE RESPONSE. PRAY THAT THEY WOULD MAKE THEIR OPINIONS KNOWN. Scripture: Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you (John 16:23b).

6. PLEASE PRAY FOR . . .

From time to time, we like to highlight a number of other ministry/prayer activities to be held in the Washington area. PLEASE PRAY FOR, AND "PASS THE WORD" ABOUT, THE FOLLOWING FOUR ITEMS, ASKING THE LORD TO BLESS EACH ONE:

a. National Day of Repentance. House Majority Whip Tom DeLay, in a recent speech in his native state of Texas, asked that Sunday, January 17, be declared a National Day of Repentance "for abortion and all the sins of the nation and its leaders." GIVE THANKS FOR REP. DELAY'S STRONG BIBLICAL CALL, AND UNDERGIRD HIS EFFORTS IN PRAYER. "When a country is rebellious, it has many rulers, but a man of understanding and knowledge maintains order" (Prov 28:2(NIV)).

b. Sanctity of Human Life Week: January 17-24. This is the week that has been set aside by numerous national ministries to focus on the issue of abortion in the United States. Please check your local churches for information about how you can be personally involved through prayer and action this week.

c. March for Life: January 22. Thousands of pro-lifers will again assemble on Constitution Avenue to protest Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court's decision legalizing abortion on this date, 26 years ago. PRAY FOR JOURNEYING MERCIES FOR ALL DEMONSTRATORS, AS WELL AS THEIR PHYSICAL WELL-BEING ON THAT DAY.

d. National Prayer Summit: Feb. 3-5. Intercessors from across the country are being urged to attend this event early next month, to pray for the leaders of our nation here in Washington, D.C. Scheduled to coincide with the National Prayer Breakfast, the Summit will offer a series of teachings, as well as times of corporate intercession. Among those speaking will be: Dr. Lloyd Ogilvie and David Wilkerson. The Summit will be held at the Washington Hilton Hotel, and participation is free of charge. For more information, contact their office at 561-835-3747.

Y2K Thought for the Week: For with God nothing shall be impossible (Luke 1:37).
