Are We Listening to God? I Mean REALLY Listening?

Each of us has been equipped by God with the ability to hear His voice. The problem is so many of us don't realize He is speaking to us in our dreams. For many years we have treated our dreams as "junk mail" and tossed them aside without taking time to study and discern the dreams properly. We must begin to take our dreams more seriously.

Remember, it was through a dream that the Father spoke to Joseph (the earthly father of Jesus) and gave him specific direction to save Jesus' life! Knowing this, we should never treat our dreams as unimportant, but rather fine tune our spiritual senses to hear His voice more accurately.

Many of my dreams actually equip me for spiritual warfare. By this, I mean that God often speaks to me in a dream concerning situations in the Body of Christ which require prayer for breakthrough. Many times the Lord exposes personal strongholds through dreams. For instance, if someone struggled with a religious spirit, it might be revealed through a dream symbolically, such as dreaming of someone who is so bent toward tradition that he/she resists the present move of His Spirit. Or, if someone struggles with a Jezebel spirit, one might have a dream of someone who is controlling and manipulating.

One of the most common dreams I hear from others are dreams that involve seductive scenes. These types of dreams are not always revealing a stronghold of sexual impurity, but rather exposure of a seducing spirit which entices us to "go back." The devil does NOT want us to possess our Promised Land, and if he can seduce us into apostasy, convincing us to remain lukewarm, he will steal our destiny!

We are in a season of "hearing." By this I mean that God is perfecting what we hear and "how" we hear. Remember when Jesus used the example of the parable of the sower in Luke chapter 8?

In this parable, Jesus was exposing the different soils of the heart, and used different illustrations to teach His disciples concerning the importance of having a heart that was constantly plowed by the Spirit of God. Jesus related to them that hard soil would not retain seed and would never produce any type of harvest. He went further to explain the rocky and thorny soil, and then compared them to the good soil which produced a good harvest. These different soils were symbolic of the soil of our personal hearts--depending on the condition of our hearts, whether or not our lives will be productive and fruitful for the Kingdom of God. Jesus ended His parable with this exhortation, "He who hath ears to hear, let him hear." (Luke 8:8).

Many times we truly believe that we are "hearing" only to realize that we are not! Let me ask you a question--are you being accountable to God concerning your dreams? Do you write down your dreams, pray over them, and ask God to reveal the interpretations? So many times God uses His night voice to speak to us concerning the condition of our hearts.

God desires to heal and restore us, and He uses dreams and visions to speak truth which will open the doors to our freedom. Because of past wounds and trauma, we don't always "hear" properly. By this I mean that we filter what has been said based on our past. Jesus addressed this by saying, "Take heed how you hear."

Ears to Hear

Let's look at what Jesus said about hearing. Luke 8:17-18, "For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither anything hid, that shall not be known and come abroad. Take heed therefore how ye hear: for whosoever hath, to him shall be given; and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have. (emphasis mine)

God Will By-Pass Our Minds to Speak Truth Through Dreams and Visions!

In this passage, Jesus is referring to everything that has been hidden, and that all hidden areas of our lives are now coming to a place of exposure! Notice, once again, that He also says that we must be careful HOW we hear what is said, and not allow what is being revealed by His Spirit to be filtered by our past! Because of our previous pain and the various mindsets concerning our future, God will by-pass our minds and speak truth to us through dreams and visions.

"How we hear" what is said by others affects our responses; this is why we must be teachable even when God speaks to us. If we receive what He is exposing and then act upon His instruction, we will be entrusted with even greater measures of healing and restoration.

Dreams and visions are part of God's plans of restoration. Since it is our season to hear, we must also understand that God opens our ears for a reason. Do you recall the tribe of Simeon? Simeon was one of the twelve tribes of Israel that descended from Jacob. Every tribe of Israel had an inheritance of land given to them by God. When Moses selected the twelve spies to scout-out Canaan, there was one leader from each of the twelve tribes who were to cross over into the Promised Land for an exploration. From the tribe of Simeon, a man named Shaphat was selected. (See Numbers 13:1-5).

Simeon is a Hebrew name which is derived from a word meaning to "hear, listen, and obey." So, this implies that the tribe of Simeon was specifically gifted in hearing. Yet, notice that there was an added responsibility to their ability to hear--they were to obey what they heard!

When We Hear, We Need to Act!

When we hear from God, we must also act upon what we hear; otherwise we will continue to remain in our past and never move forward into a place of enlargement and increase. The tribe of Simeon had already heard the promise from the Lord concerning their future, and they were to take heed "how they heard" the promise. Since they had a previous slavery mentality from Egypt, they could not fully "hear" their promise of breakthrough and act upon it! This was why when Shaphat, the leader from the Simeon tribe, crossed over, he could not continue to hear the positive report God had given them previous to their crossing.

The name Shaphat is a Hebrew name meaning "to judge" or "be judged." Shaphat had a keen ability to hear and focus on God's promise, yet when he saw the giants in the land, he judged the situation negatively. He did not properly hear, discern, and act upon the Word of the Lord; therefore, he returned to Moses with an evil report.

Dear Ones, please hear me! Because at times we may not properly hear God's voice, be sure to be attentive to your dreams and visions. The Lord has given each of us a promise of breakthrough. This is our season of enlargement and increase. We must be open-minded concerning the various ways that God wants to speak to us!

God Wants to Reveal the Condition of Our Hearts

Do you remember Nebuchadnezzar and how God had to speak truth to him through his dreams? At first, Nebuchadnezzar would not heed the words of correction and direction given from God as Daniel interpreted the dreams. The King recognized Daniel's awesome gift and exhorted him. Daniel corrected the king telling him that it was not his own (Daniel's) wisdom which was able to interpret the dream. But the dream was given and interpreted by Daniel, so that the king would know the thoughts (condition) of his own heart.

"But as for me, this secret is not revealed to me for any wisdom that I have more than any living, but for their sakes that shall make known the interpretation to the king, and that thou mightest know the thoughts of thy heart." (Daniel 2:30; emphasis mine)

The very same can occur in our own dreams! God may be attempting to expose hidden motives while we dream. Or maybe, God may be talking to us about our future business ventures, financial breakthroughs, and blessings that will soon manifest. Whatever He is speaking, we need to be hearing!

The New Thing

"Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert." (Isaiah 43:18-19)

I would like to challenge you to just one more thought concerning dreams and visions. Since God is doing a New Thing, we need to KNOW what it is when we see it, or hear it! So many of us have mindsets concerning how the Holy Spirit moves. And when God does the NEW THING, we might miss it, because we are not "hearing" and "judging" properly.

Remember now, Shaphat, from the tribe of Simeon, did not hear nor judge properly all that he experienced in the new place. I have often wondered why God didn't simply put Shaphat to sleep and speak to him concerning the entrance into his promise. After all, God did that for Jacob! Yes, Jacob came to a certain place and God put him to sleep to talk to him. Do you remember the dream?

Jacob's dream is described in Genesis 28:12, "And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it." Jacob witnessed the presence of God, the angelic visitation, named that certain place "Bethel," and he shifted into covenant relationship...all through a dream!

Precious Saints, the Lord desires to do the very same for us by releasing dreams and visions. He will release greater understanding of His covenant blessings through your dreams and visions, as well as restore your ability to hear properly His divine direction to break through into your Promised Land.

I Hear the Lord Saying to His Body and to Those Who HEAR:

"Rise Up! Rise up all ye who hear the Word of the Lord! I am doing a New Thing. This is your season to hear and act upon your promise. This is not a time to hold back. I am cutting My Body loose from all previous restraints."

"I am going to release a fresh power and anointing for breakthrough. Can you HEAR the SOUND of the BREAKTHROUGH? It is a sound of My power; it is the sound of My voice; and it is the sound of the angelic army being released on My behalf!"

"Take heed how you hear and what you hear in this hour. Listen for My voice, and My voice only. There are many false voices and false sounds. But, I am breaking off the power of the occult, and all of the occult entanglements that have hindered My people."

"No longer will things remain hidden, for I am exposing all things. I am releasing a greater discernment among My people as I also release My Church from the demonic control that has hindered the move of My Spirit."

"This is the time for celebration and great joy, because I am doing a New Thing upon the earth, and My people will rejoice as the new sound is heard throughout the land," says the Lord.
