"Operation Prayer Watch--December 2005"

As we come to the close of another year, I have been considering
my journey these past twelve months and all the tests, trials, and victories that I have walked
through. I began to sum up all that the Holy Spirit had taught me in 2005 in these words: rest,
wait, and depend. I then remembered the words I had received coming into this past year. The
words the Lord spoke to me upon entering 2005 were from Zechariah 4:6:
". . . 'Not by might nor by power,
but by My Spirit,' says the LORD."
As I entered 2005, I was committed to allow the Holy Spirit
to teach me to walk by His Spirit rather than by might or power (or my strength). As this year
has gone by, I have been in situation after situation where I became quite tempted to take
matters into my own hands. I quickly realized that I was in the school of the Spirit to learn
about depending on His Spirit, rather than my strength or even the strength of my giftings.
STAY THE COURSE
The first test came when the Lord asked my husband and I to bring our ministry into a posture
of waiting (we are directors of The War Room, which is a strategic prayer center for the nations).
This "waiting" included stopping all ongoing scheduled prayer sessions each day in order to bring
our team, and anyone who chose to join us, together to "wait upon Him." As wonderful as that
sounds, it can be quite a challenge to one's flesh.
We were also instructed to stop our ongoing training school
and to stop accepting applications for more team members. Doing this also stopped all incoming
funds. For six months, we went into a time of
"waiting." In those months, I found that the Lord was ridding me of dependence on my own strengths.
This entire process offended my mind and appeared to be undoing all that we had built in the
past years. However, it also made me more hungry for His presence than ever before.
As we began our fall sessions in The War Room, we had practically lost our entire team, with
the exception of a handful of people. God chose to use this time of waiting to re-align people
in different places. My husband Jeff and I had spent a few weeks during the summer waiting and
asking if our time in Canada was finished. The Lord said, "No, go back and stay the course." This
brought us into a new season of waiting. We returned to Canada and began the new sessions in
The War Room with only a few people to lead meetings. We felt like Gideon's army--being reduced
to what looked like a "joke" to the enemy.
Once again, my mind was offended, but I prayed and re-committed myself to walk by His Spirit
rather than by my understanding. Then this past month, Jeff and I found ourselves in financial
need. When we reached this point, we began to talk once again about moving back to California
in order for Jeff to get his old job back and make good money for our family once again. We reasoned
in our minds that this would enable us to give rather than receive.
WALKING BY HIS SPIRIT
As we considered this plan, completely ignoring the fact that the Lord had said to "stay the
course," the Lord spoke to us out of Isaiah 30:15-18:
"For thus the Lord GOD, the Holy One
of Israel, has said, 'In returning and rest you shall be saved, in quietness and trust
is your strength (salvation).' But you were not willing, and you said, 'No, for we will
flee on horses,' therefore you shall flee! 'And we will ride on swift horses,' therefore
those who pursue you shall be swift. One thousand shall flee at the threat of one man,
you shall flee at the threat of five; until you are left as a flag on a mountain top,
and as a signal on a hill. Therefore, the Lord longs (waits) to be gracious to you, and
therefore, He waits on high to have compassion on you. For the LORD is a God of justice;
how blessed are all those who long (wait) for Him."
In these verses, the horses refer to the strength of men (or
of Egypt, as spoken to the children of Israel). If we were to trust in our own strength and
abilities, we would actually be opening a door to be pursued by our enemy in a swift way. But
as we lay down our strength, our understanding, our abilities, and return to the Lord in rest,
quietness, and trust, we receive His grace, His mercy, and His strength. This is the truth
of walking "By His Spirit," rather than by might or power.
GREATER DEPENDENCY ON HIM
Both Jeff and I repented and returned to our dependency on God, right there on the spot, and
closed the door to even entertaining thoughts of taking matters into our own hands and strength.
We closed the door to relying upon the "swift horses of the past." And we opened the door to
the Lord's grace and mercy, as we committed to return and rest in Him.
I share this journey because this has been a human struggle since the beginning of time. Even
Adam and Eve took matters into their own hands. God is longing and waiting to be gracious to
His children and to show us mercy. Our strength is truly in walking by His Spirit. His Spirit
leads us into a place of quiet trust and rest from the heavy yokes that the enemy wants to put
upon us. I am looking forward to a year of truly "leaning on my Beloved" as Song of Solomon speaks
of in chapter 8, verse 5. I am also looking forward to more of His love being made manifest in
my life. Greater dependency on Him has made room for it!
May you be immersed in His rest, His love, and His presence during this Christmas season and
as you enter the new year.
