Pentecost: An Old Testament Holy Day and a New Testament Landmark

"And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of My Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams." (Acts 2:17 KJV)

Pentecost is the season where those of Jewish ancestry, along with many Christian Believers, celebrate and commemorate both an Old Testament holy day and a New Testament landmark.

In the Old Testament, Pentecost (Shavuot, "Feast of Weeks," in Hebrew) was one of the major Hebraic festivals. It marked the end of the barley harvest and occurred fifty days after the sacrifice of the Passover lamb and the offering of firstfruits.

"Also in the day of the firstfruits, when ye bring a new meat offering unto the Lord, after your weeks be out, ye shall have an holy convocation; ye shall do no servile work." (Numbers 28:26 KJV)

Pentecost in the New Testament

The New Testament adds even greater significance to Pentecost for Believers in Christ. It was still fifty days after the sacrifice of the Passover Lamb, but that time, it was not an animal slain. It was the Son of the living God, sacrificed as the Lamb of God. (Photo via Pixnio)

Then, something powerful, foundational, and transformational happened in Acts chapter 2. The Spirit of God was poured out upon the Body of Christ. The early Church—and the Gospel message—was catapulted into a new dimension of power, revelation, and harvest.

"And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from Heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance." (Acts 2:1–4 KJV)

Whooo! God has given us, as Believers, a precious gift and promise from on high—the outpouring of the Holy Spirit! What a historic moment, and what a powerful time each year to celebrate and remember what God has done. However, during prayer, God spoke to me emphatically and said, "Pentecost is now!"

Pentecost Now and Every Day

Yes, Pentecost is a specific calendar date each year. Yes, Pentecost is a historical moment of God's Spirit being poured out. But in the spirit realm, Pentecost is NOW. It is perpetual in its availability. The outpouring of the Spirit is not limited to a date; it is accessible today.

"He that hath the key of David, He that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth." (Revelation 3:7 KJV)

Jesus holds the key of David. Once He opened the door to the outpouring of Pentecost, it was never closed. The enemy does not have the authority to shut that door. No denomination, no false doctrine—nothing can shut what God has opened. Glory to God!

"And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of My Spirit upon all flesh ... And on My servants and on My handmaidens I will pour out in those days of My Spirit; and they shall prophesy." (Acts 2:17–18 KJV) (Photo via Pixabay)

Notice, Scripture does not say "on that day," but "in the last days." We are living in those days now. If there was ever a time that felt like the last days it is now. The same Spirit and power available to the early Church is still available today! God is intentional and inclusive.

The promise of Pentecost includes...

• Young men
• Old men
• Sons and daughters
• Servants and handmaidens

It is for everyone who will receive and believe—including YOU.

Yes, we must celebrate what the Lord has done. Yes, we honor the calendar day of Pentecost (Shavuot) and what occurred in Acts chapter 2. But don't stop there. Do not allow Pentecost to become a dead landmark in your life. Let Pentecost remain a living reality—a continual outpouring as Christ expresses Himself through you.

Make yourself available like the early Believers did. Pour out your heart before God. Ask Him for power. Repent and remove anything that hinders your walk with Christ. And let the power of Pentecost fall on you today or any day. Pentecost is now!
