Steve Porter: No Fellowship with Darkness

Steve Porter, Rochester, NY
Aug 24, 2025

"Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them." (Ephesians 5:11 NIV)

The Call of the Bride

Beloved, I sense a deep stirring in the heart of God for His Bride in this hour. There is a holy invitation going forth—a call to come away from the shadows and stand fully in the light. The Lord is asking for separation from the world. He's calling us out of mixture and into majesty, out of compromise and into consecration. But remember this, dear one: By your own strength, you will never be good enough. You could strive and strain all your days and still fall short of His glory.

"All our righteous acts are like filthy rags." (Isaiah 64:6 NIV)

True holiness does not come from a white-knuckled effort; it flows from intimacy with Jesus. It is not earned through only perfect rule-keeping but birthed in the secret place, where love refines and the Spirit sanctifies.

He's not waiting for you to be flawless. He's waiting for you to be yielded—to come away from the world's noise and lean into the whisper of His call, to stop trying to be righteous without Him and instead allow His righteousness to be formed within you.

Let Your Hearts Be Aflame for Him

This is not a time to flirt with darkness. The hour is late, and the Bridegroom is near. The Spirit is crying out for a people whose garments are washed, whose lamps are burning, and whose hearts are anchored in the center of His will—not on the edges, not along the borders, but deep in the heart of His light. Don't Let Yourself Drift from Holy Fire

Oh, dear one, how easy it is to dance near the red line! How subtle the drift can be from holy fire to half-hearted faith. It begins with "just a little," just one compromise, just one indulgence; but soon joy begins to leak, peace grows dim, and intimacy fades like a morning mist. You wake up one day, and the garden of your soul has become a dry and barren wilderness. That's what fellowship with darkness does.

It doesn't always look like outright rebellion. Sometimes, it looks like the movies we justify... the music we excuse... the attitudes we refuse to surrender. It looks like tolerating what Jesus died to free us from. It's that slow erosion of conviction, and before we know it, we're walking with heavy feet in places where we once ran with holy fire. But here is the good news: There is a way back. There is always a way back.

Run to the altar, beloved. Run to the feet of Jesus with your weary heart. Repent deeply with godly sorrow. Lay down the compromises. Lay down the habits, the secret sin, the excuses. Ask Him for holy eyes, holy hands, holy thoughts, holy feet, and He will not turn you away. He will wash you. He will renew you. He will restore you. The wilderness will bloom again, the joy will return, and the fruit will reappear, because holiness is not about legalism, it's about love. It's about a Bride who loves her Bridegroom enough to stay close to His heart and far from what grieves Him. It's about choosing Him over every fleeting pleasure. It's about purity—not for show but for intimacy.

The Glory of Being Fully His

"You will know them by their fruits." (Matthew 7:16 NKJV)

This is how we shine in a crooked and perverse generation, not by shouting at the darkness but by radiating with Heaven's light. Fruitfulness will always expose barrenness. A holy life will always contrast with compromise.

I hear the Spirit saying, "I am searching for a Bride whose private life matches her public worship... whose secret place is pure, not polluted... whose love for Me burns hotter than the fire of the world's approval." (Photo via Flickr)

Dear friend, you don't have to live on the edge anymore. You were not made to survive in the gray. You were made to thrive in the light. You were made to be a resting place for His glory.

Let the Spirit search you. Let Him purify the places no one sees. Let Him lead you away from what's unfruitful and back to the center of His heart.

Yes, it may feel costly. Yes, it may be lonely. But oh, the joy of walking unburdened! Oh, the peace of a conscience washed clean! Oh, the glory of being fully His!

What Will You Answer?

Beloved, this is not about shame. This is about a Bride making herself ready. Are you ready? The Lord is calling you to purity. He's calling you to holiness. He's calling you to fruitfulness. He's calling you to light.

And when we stand before Him one day, it won't matter how close we walked to the edge without falling in. What will matter is how faithfully we walked in His light, bearing fruit that glorified the Father and prepared the way for the coming King.

So, say yes. Say yes to the narrow way; say yes to the light; say yes to a life that bears fruit in every season, because the Bride He returns for will be glorious—without spot, without wrinkle, without compromise—clothed in holiness, radiant with love, and ready for His return.
