My grandmother, mother, and aunt often spoke about our house being haunted. I was initially very skeptical, but a series of ominous, unexplainable events convinced me otherwise. These ghostly manifestations occurred before, during, and especially after the expulsion of the Ouija board.

My first encounter with the supernatural happened when I was about eight years of age. I was playing on the back porch of my grandmother's home and had to use the bathroom, so I ventured through the lowly lit kitchen to the restroom. I went in and instinctively closed the door behind me. As I reached up to turn on the light switch, I noticed a figure, which was darker than the darkness of the room and towering over me. The moonlight that peered in through the glass-block window provided me with an outline. Strangely, I felt very little fear—just awe and wonder.

The entity stood about six feet, a couple of feet taller than me at the time. I couldn't tell if it was male or female. My initial notion was that it could be my aunt. This thought was quickly dashed when I reached out, endeavoring to touch the shadowy character, while simultaneously inquiring, "Helen?"

To my horror, my hand just passed through it! This is when the spirit of fear leapt into my body. The apparition appeared to gaze down at me and slowly began to turn away from me, proceeding in the direction of the adjacent bathtub. Then it disappeared.

I stood there for a few seconds, which felt like an eternity, until terror got the best of me. I bolted out of the room, frantically searching for the nearest family member. I found Helen and relayed my paranormal meeting to her, like water being hurriedly poured into a glass. After listening intently, she simply and calmly responded, "I've seen it too."

It's Not Who You Think It Is

Once again, I want to make it clear that ghosts are not the spirits of our dearly departed. They are actually demons in disguise! Some believe that the dead walk the earth, constantly looking for the eternal rest in God that always seems to evade them. Hebrews 9:27 says, "...[I]t is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment." According to the holy Scriptures, there is no purgatory. It's either Heaven or Hell. Even in biblical times, the disciples of Christ referenced ghosts.

"And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid." (Matthew 14:25–27) (Photo via Flickr)

The word spirit used in the Scripture above is defined as "an apparition; a ghost." 1 Matthew 14:26 states, "When the disciples saw Him walking on the water, they were terrified. In their fear, they cried out, 'It's a ghost!'" (NLT).

If you ever see a deceased loved one manifest in your presence, rebuke the ghost in Jesus' name! It's not your family member or friend. It's a malevolent spirit disguised as them.

Many of these demons inhabited the dearly beloved before they expired, absorbing many of their experiences and memories. Upon materialization, they'll have the same recall as the departed relative or friend. That's one of the reasons the Bible calls them "familiar spirits." (See Leviticus 19:31; 20:6, 27; Deuteronomy 18:11; 1 Samuel 28:3-9.) They become familiar with their host, due to living in them, and can regurgitate various aspects of their lives with you upon request.

1 John 4:1-3 admonishes us to try or test the spirit to see if it's of God. If it is, it will confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh. If not, it won't. I realize that this particular verse makes reference to the false prophet. I believe that it can also apply to the various demonic spirits that try to appear as apparitions in an effort to deceive us.

Call on Jesus; He Will Save You

There once was an unsaved woman who was deeply involved in the occult. As she lay dying, she could see demons insidiously crawling around her bed. She told the people who surrounded her deathbed that they were there waiting for her to die so they could escort her to Hell! Just seconds before she passed, the woman screamed, with eyes bulging and full of panic, "Help me! I'm burning!" Then she died with her mouth gaping and a terrifyingly twisted expression on her face. Witnesses reported that she looked as if she saw satan himself! Unfortunately, there are many more awfully similar "final last words" spoken by those who didn't know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior while alive.

An authentic affiliation with God is the key to being supernaturally delivered from the clutches of the enemy, even at the end of our lives. He's so merciful that even at the conclusion of your life, you can repent, call upon Him, and He will save you. Satan has deceived many into thinking that He won't, but the devil is a liar. Don't fall for his lies! If you don't know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, then you can't experience supernatural deliverance. It's imperative that you know Him and make absolutely sure He knows you too. That way, the Most High will fill your house (body). Where the Holy Spirit fills, evil spirits cannot occupy.

Your Season to Clean House

The items you bring into your home should be holy, not the opposite. If you aren't careful and well-informed, you can unknowingly bring demons into your household. Let this be your season to clean house. Ask the Lord to show you everything in your residence that is not of Him. You must understand that evil spirits use cursed objects—idols, paintings, totems, statues, music CDs, movies, and the like—as entry points. Be extra diligent when bringing objects into your house from countries whose god is not your God. Anything of a demonic origin must be cast out of the home and destroyed. If not, the dwelling is laid open to demonic penetration.

As a teenager, I unintentionally brought all kinds of demonic things into my parents' house. As a result, there was an increase in nefarious supernatural phenomena. During that time, I got into a huge argument with my mother. Don't look at me like that! I'm sure some of you are quite familiar with the rebellious teenager stage. As a result of our disagreement, I went to spend the night with my aunt. When I returned, my mother relayed an incredible story to me about what transpired after I left.

She was in the basement watching television, and the door to it slammed violently. My mother was startled and was gripped by immense anger as she went up the stairs to see who the culprit was. When she got there, to her surprise, no one was there. She went to her bedroom, only to find her husband and my younger brother fast asleep in the bed. My brother, Jeff, was around three years old at the time. There's no way that he could slam the door with such force. (Photo via Unsplash)

My mom ventured toward my room. The door was shut. She cautiously opened it and felt as if someone or something was behind it. As she peered into the darkness, cautiously, a disembodied voice ominously said, "Come in." With that, my mother speedily closed the door and backed away from my bedroom.

Hearing her account upon my return home, I warily entered my room, immediately aware that my dresser was pushed closer to my door. This prevented it from being opened fully. I guardedly searched my room, looking for an intruder. Finding no one, my mind started to wrap itself around the notion that the perpetrator could possibly be otherworldly (demonic). This was an alarmingly frightening conclusion. I prayed, laid in my bed, and apprehensively went to sleep.

As I previously noted, due to bringing demonic material into my room, something devilish gained admittance. I'm also of the mindset that evil entities abided in my childhood home even before I brought in accursed materials. It was reported that the previous owners frequently argued and fought. This time of atmosphere is a breeding ground for satanic activity. These demons linked up and became even stronger.

Please remember, demonic strength is nothing compared to the power of the Lord! Demons are only as strong as we allow them to be in our lives. In this case, knowledge is power. When you acquire knowledge of them, you'll in turn discover how to defeat them and remove their influence in your home and in your life. Tormenting demons have no place in your life as you seek to live as one who's been supernaturally delivered.
