Matthew
1:5-6 "Salmon begot Boaz by Rahab...and Jesse begot David, the King."
Hebrews 11:30-31 "By faith the walls of Jericho fell, after the people had
marched around them for seven days. By faith the prostitute, Rahab, because she
welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient."
Joshua sent two spies into Jericho. As they were hunted, they were desperately seeking
refuge. Where did they find a safe haven -- in a religious temple? No. Hiding for
their very lives, their refuge was found in a very unlikely place! The door that
they entered was open for many -- a prostitute's house of trade. Rahab, a Canaanite,
was an enemy to the Law of Moses as well as a woman of ill repute. It is so important
to realize how significant this is! In Jericho, their sanctuary and safety was found
in the den of the enemy -- a pagan prostitute's house!
As God starts to take you into the Jerichos of your life, He asks if you are willing
to knock on unlikely and unreligious doors? Hearing God's voice was not an option
for the spies, but a survival mechanism, as they would be executed if they were
caught. If they had not learned the Lord's voice in the wilderness, they would not
have been prepared for the invasion of Jericho that awaited them. Are you willing
to press in to hear the Lord's voice and move in radical and unreligious strategies?
God does not want you to rely on human reasoning or on religious law, but to lean
into Him for fresh blueprint plans. This can save your life in a critical moment,
even as the spies were spared.
The Body of Christ Will Be Birthed from the Most Unlikely of Places
Rahab, in the Word of God, was called "Righteous Rahab" because she hid the spies
even at the expense of her own family's life. In return, all she asked for was that
her family be spared. She was like an early "Corrie Ten Boom" who hid the Jews in
WWII. What is so remarkable about this woman of trade is that after the invasion
of Jericho, she married a captain in Joshua's army. Joshua's battle did much more
than just tear down the walls of Jericho -- he came to rescue a bride. For out of
her seed came King David, and later Jesus. What if they had never knocked on her
door?
Rahab is a prophetic picture of the end-time Church. The Bride of Christ will be
birthed from the most unlikely of places. God's love will transform a whore into
a heroine and a harlot into a pure and spotless Bride. The Lord wants to take off
our blinders. Are you willing to find the Rahabs? What is the 21st century translation
of a modern-day Rahab? She wears designer clothes, frequents the mall, and is desperately
looking for love in all the wrong places. The Lord wants to take off our religious
blinders and partner with Him to find His Bride.
(Prayer: Oh Lord, I must know and feel Your heart for
Your people. I don't want to religiously write off the Rahabs - I want to rescue
them. Help me to look past the sin and love the sinner. Help me to go to the unlikely,
overlooked, unlovely places to bring salvation and healing to Your wounded Bride.)
Radical Visitation
for Divine Strategies
Hebrews 11:30 "By faith the walls of Jericho fell, after the people had marched
around them for seven days."
Another strategy Joshua received was a radical visitation from the Captain of the
Host. He said to Joshua, "See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with
its king and fighting men." Then He gave Joshua divine strategies on how to take
down Jericho. Joshua's first response to this unusual battle plan must have been,
"Huh? Did you say, trumpets? Don't you mean spears, knives, arrows, shields and
battering rams?"
Picture this -- their fearless leader has returned with a heavenly battle strategy
that will bring sure victory and take them into the Promised Land. The anticipation
reaches a fevered pitch and Joshua says, "Good news men: The Captain of the Hosts
appeared to me." The men whoop and yell, jabbing the air with their swords and waving
their shields. "The bad news is, He gave me the battle plan." Kicking the sand with
his toe, Joshua mumbles to the confused soldiers, "Uh, marching, priests, trumpets,
ark, shouting, walls fall down."
Our God is
Incredible and Creative
We've pretty much become immune to the story of Jericho
because it's so well-known, but let's stop and really see it again with fresh eyes.
What an incredible story! What a unique strategy! No commander on earth would plan
for battle like that. What great faith he had to go to war when your front line
of protection is a group of trumpet-playing priests. But you know the happy ending,
"...the walls came a tumblin' down."
In times of great weakness, when Joshua could only depend on the Lord, the strategies
he received were truly unusual and creative. The Lord required prophetic acts that
would seem utterly ridiculous to the natural mind. Marching seven times around the
city while blowing a horn and believing that the walls would fall? Preposterous!
Hiding in a brothel? Scandalous!
Our God is incredible and creative, moving with supernatural miracle power in the
midst of our obedience and trusting in Him -- even in the midst of what seems simple
or ridiculous -- but the Lord knew the exact timing and strategy to take down that
fortified city.
(Prayer: Lord, we want the walls to tumble down around
our city! Help us to do radical exploits in God for You -- using trumpets as weapons
and worship as warfare! Help us to take new territory in the spirit for You!)
