In April of 2002, while I was in Norway ministering, the Lord spoke to me that the United States would go into Iraq. I felt that the build up would begin during the month of February, 2003. I also felt that the Lord gave me the following scripture:


Jeremiah 51:27-29

"Set up a banner in the land, Blow the trumpet among the nations! Prepare the nations against her, Call the kingdoms together against her: Ararat, Minni, and Ashkenaz.  Appoint a general against her; Cause the horses to come up like the bristling locusts.  Prepare against her the nations, With the kings of the Medes, Its governors and all its rulers, All the land of his dominion, And the land will tremble and sorrow; For every purpose of the Lord shall be performed against Babylon, To make the land of Babylon a desolation without inhabitant." (NKJV)

Appoint A General Against Her
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

After reading this scripture, the Lord spoke to my heart that I was to do just exactly what this verse said, "Appoint a general against her" (Babylon).  When I asked the Lord when to do this international gathering of generals, he told me, "January, 2003."  As I looked at the calendar, I sensed that we must begin on January 16th in Washington, D.C.

This proved to be a very significant date.  I had not realized, at the time, that the evening of January 16th, Eastern Standard Time, would be the anniversary of the launch of Operation Desert Storm.  We launched our prayer initiative against Babylon that same date, twelve years later.

In asking the Lord why the United States would go into Iraq, one of the main reasons the Lord gave me was that He wanted us to protect Israel from a preemptive attack by Iraq.  Another reason the Lord gave me was that He wanted the Middle East to crack open for the gospel. He wanted to humble the spirit of Islam.

The International Convocation of Generals meeting was attended by leaders from over thirty nations.  This group of leaders paid their own expenses to come to Washington to receive God's battle strategies.  Among them were leaders of very large churches in Europe as well as Asia.  Every continent of the world was represented.

"I Became Deeply Convicted About My Own Response to the Allied Victory During the Gulf War"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

We started the meeting with prayer points that we had received from a prophetic council that met the week before our gathering. The word of the Lord had been that if the United States should go into Iraq with a lack of humility and reliance on our military power, then we would be judged in return. This was a very sobering word.

As I prayed about this admonition from the Lord, I became deeply convicted about my own response to the allied victory during the Gulf War.  The Lord showed me that I had only rejoiced in our victory, but had felt no sorrow for the 100,000 Iraqi's who had died in the battles.  Some reports also say that 300,000 were wounded and at least 60,000 more were captured.

In addition, as I studied the Gulf War, I began to feel that we had sinned against the people of Iraq through the sin of omission.  Let me explain.  The allies swept through Kuwait at such a fast pace that the Republican Guard, Saddam's crack troops, never entered Kuwait.  When the surrender was signed, they began a systematic elimination of Iraqi's opposed to Saddam, at his command.

First, they went to the south and began killing the Shiite Muslims.  (See the Spiritual Mapping of Iraq article on this site http://www.generals.org to more fully understand the different factions in Iraq.)  The Republican Guard also destroyed many Shiite holy sites.

Next, they went to the north and began slaughtering all of the opposition factions among the Kurds.  The Kurds are the ancient Medes of the Bible. This resulted in thousands of people fleeing across the border.  People died from starvation, in addition to those who were slaughtered.  The United States finally realized what was happening and sent relief to the refugee camps.

It is my belief that by not protecting Iraqi factions opposed to Saddam – those that we hoped would overthrow Saddam from within, many of them were destroyed.

Open Heavens Between the Nations

The first night of the meeting, I shared this with the leaders and asked those from America to come forward.  Many were on their faces weeping before the Lord and asking forgiveness.  We cried out to the Lord for a spirit of humility and brokenness for our leaders, both in government and the military.  All during the meeting, we were conscious of the fact that people from both the civilian and military sectors could die if there was a war.  The fear of the Lord was upon us strongly while we prayed for the three days of the convocation.

At the end of the time of repentance from the United States, a leader from Brazil stood up and said,

"We need to repent to the United States as well.  We just take and take from you and never say thank you or think how you might feel.  It seems that we only criticize you." 

When those words were spoken, there were more tears shed as forgiveness was extended.  One could literally feel things cracking open in the heavens between nations that night.

(On a side note, before the meetings started the evening of January 16th, we had a briefing from a U.S. governmental leader before eighty of us toured the U.S. Department of State.  Repentance was extended toward Romania because the U.S. had appointed a homosexual ambassador to that nation.  As a result of that appointment, Romanian laws were changed to allow for homosexuality in the nation. Other leaders expressed their grievances and we expressed the need for earnest prayer for our State Department and prayed for God to forgive us for each of the infractions against other nations.)

Protection for Israel
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

On the next morning, January 17th, we started bright and early with powerful worship.  Each session had a focus, and this one was dealing with Israel and protection for that nation.  We also had times of repentance towards the Jews and Israel.  A representative from Ethiopia shared how his nation was in what is called a "green drought," meaning that there is vegetation, but not fruit.  He said that his country rejected Israel at one point in its history and he repented.

Leaders from Israel shared how different intercessory groups in Jerusalem believe that Israel may be on the verge of a war, where the nations listed in Psalm 83 form a confederacy against the nation.  We prayed about this and then asked ourselves if it was time for the war of all wars - Armageddon.  We all concurred that this was not the time for that final battle. We felt, during our times of prayer, that intercessors need to understand ancient nations and boundaries in order to pray correctly. For instance, Assyria in scripture is mostly modern day Syria.

Where The Name Iraq Comes From

The next session brought out issues pertaining to Britain, Iraq, and Israel.  As far as the Iraq situation, you can see from the spiritual mapping that Iraq was formed as a nation by the British.  This was in order to establish a Middle Eastern colony and obtain oil.  At the same time, Iraq's neighbor Iran was formed.  The name Iran comes from the term "Aryan," which Hitler was said to have loved.  At this time, other Middle Eastern nations were formed as well by the Triple Alliance of British, French, and Russians.  This occurred during the Treaty of Entente in 1914.  Thus Iran, which had been known as Persia, and Iraq, which was previously known as Mesopotamia, came into being.  The British then set in a puppet king to rule Iraq.  Within Iraq, three different factions were grouped together: the Kurds in the north (biblically the Medes); the Sunni Muslims (Saddam is from this group, along with the ruling political parties); and the Shiite Muslims in the south. The rest of the history can be obtained from the mapping (see article below).

In our meeting, realizing that this was a lot to disentangle, we did an initial time of repentance by Britain for the historical part they played in the current Middle East situation, led by two representatives who attended from England.  For instance, there was betrayal of the Arab and Assyrian Christians who, in return for their helping the Triple Alliance fight the Ottomans, were both promised the same land.  The leaders from Israel also shared how the Jews and their nation have been hurt by Britain.  This is sad because, historically, the British had historically been leading supporters for the Jews to have a homeland, as those who study Evangelical Pietism tell us.  There was much weeping as we prayed for the British leaders to have strength as God was calling them to deal with these issues.  Plans are being made to follow through with repentance on a larger scale in England at a later time.

The Spirit of Babylon
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

At the end of this session we had a meeting for all those who had done research on the subject of the spirit of Babylon. All during the meeting it was stressed that we were not dealing with the nation of Iraq, but rather the spirit of Babylon.  Inside information was shared with us in D.C. that Saddam Hussein believes that [he] is Nebuchadnezzar reincarnated. Of course, Muslims do not believe in reincarnation, so he is not following the beliefs of Islam, totally. He is, however, a very mystical person.

It is always fascinating how the Holy Spirit will have leaders from around the world studying the same subject and how they draw the same conclusions.  In the case of this group, with about eight people or from five different nations, they all had been looking into the spirit of Babylon.  In fact, two people attending the convocation had already been to Iraq on prayer journeys and one had planted Jeremiah 50 and 51 on the walls of Babylon.

Another of the leaders told us she had been studying Jeremiah 50:2, which says, "Declare among the nations, Proclaim, and set up a standard; Proclaim - do not conceal it - Say, Babylon is taken, Bel is shamed."  Some Bible translations say "confounded" rather than "shamed."

God is Leading President Bush
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

As she looked up the word "confounded" in her lexicon, she found that the word in Hebrew is "Bush!"  We were amazed at that!  Each of us felt in our hearts that God wants to humble the spirit of Islam and its god, Allah, and that God is leading President Bush.  We felt that the true God would prevail and the region would open for the gospel.  The spirit of Babylon was going to be broken in order to change the nation of Iraq. 

I previously mentioned how a group of prophets met one week before the convocation.  During that meeting, two prophecies came forth about God drawing a new map of the Middle East, based on ethnic lines.  This would probably mean that there would be a Kurdistan, which Iran and Turkey do not want, made up of the Kurds.  Part of Iraq would become Mesopotamia and Iran and the Shiites in the south would become Persia.  The prophecy was that God is going to redraw the map of the region.  This would be interesting, because when it happens, it will undo what was historically done through the Triple Entente, to some degree.

Our small convocation group who met concerning Babylon also discussed what a leader from Austria shared with us concerning the ancient spirits, Cush and Bel who were the powers behind Nineveh and followed in Babylon.  Bel became Hermes in the Greek culture.  We get our word Hermeneutics from this word.  This is what is studied as a course in Christian seminaries, today.  This produces Greek thinking, which opposes the Hebraic thinking of the Bible.  There was repentance for this kind of teaching and thinking in the church, so our minds could be free to pray correctly.

Let the Veils Be Rent

The last sessions were a time when we could finally begin to bring all the threads together.  After consulting with both military and governmental leaders, we felt that we had the mind of the Lord concerning a possible war with Iraq.

One of the first things we felt that needed to be dealt with was that Saddam Hussein is protected by an Occult spirit.  The word occult means hidden.  This spirit is hiding him, so he cannot be found by military intelligence.

We also could see that there is an actual veil over the minds of the Islamic people of the region, which is manifested by the veiling of the women.  One of the men came up with the scripture from Jeremiah 9:17 which says,

"Consider and call for the mourning women, that they may come; and send for skillful wailing women that they may come." 

At this, we called up all the women from the convocation, who knelt down at the front.  One woman in our midst is a medical doctor, who has worked in Afghanistan.  She stood in the gap for the veiled women of the Middle East, while the men of the convocation gathered around the women.  The man who received the scripture from Jeremiah 9 blew two shofars, with a wailing sound to call for the time of prayer.

As we began to pray, a leader from Europe stepped forward to say,

"This is right because of certain rites of the ancient religion in the region we are dealing with."

He went on to explain that in ancient Babylon, the religion of the time, required women to go to the ziggurats and stay there until a man, who was a stranger, had sex with them.  Some women had to stay for months.

Our weeping was deep for the abuse of the women in the region and there was repentance on behalf of the men towards the women.  At the end of this time, one of the men took the veil off of the women through a prophetic act.  Then we began to command the veil which covers the minds of the Islamic people to be rent.

What Should Take Place In and Around Iraq?

The last session was very powerful as demonic spirits over the region of Iraq were addressed in many languages, such as Greek, German, Korean, Spanish, and other languages.  Remember that the original word we received was to "call the kingdoms and nations together against Iraq and appoint a general against her."  The anointing in the room was very, very powerful, as the leaders moved together in unity to dismantle demonic strongholds.

At the end we began to cry out to God, as we had before, for the timing of the Lord to be perfect and for all of His purposes to be fulfilled.  We prayed about the convocation's consensus as to what should take place in and around Iraq.

First, we felt that an allied army, at least at the borders, was necessary to protect the innocent in the nation.  Secondly, we felt that Saddam and his two sons should be captured and brought before an international war crimes tribunal.  We prayed and asked God to protect innocent civilians as well as those in the military. Then we asked God to bring His coalition together - those who would hold the peace while a democratically elected government could be put in place.  We cried out for the Lord to crack open the Middle East for the gospel.  Then, we rebuked the occult spirit that was hiding Saddam Hussein and prayed that he would be found and captured and brought to justice, along with his two sons.

Advancing the Kingdom of God Into Muslim Territories

A final important aspect of the Convocation of Generals was the strong sense that we were actually praying "end-time prayers" - prayers that would hasten the coming of the Lord.  We felt that the Middle-East would be harvested for the Lord and that we need to establish a "shark net" of intercession across the face of the earth.  This net, like those that protect swimmers from sharks on some beaches, will cover missionaries and leaders who go in to evangelize the nations of the earth affected by Islam, will be an early warning device, and will protect believers from the powers of darkness that would try to attack them as they advanced the Kingdom of God into Muslim territories.

Geographic location

Iraq is located in the center of the Middle East.  It sits astride the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, the ancient region of Mesopotamia.  It borders Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Turkey, Jordan, and Syria, and has an outlet to the Persian Gulf.  Most of the world's oil comes from this region.

Army
~~~~~~~

Iraq's army is about one million men, the largest in the Middle East, when reserves are included.  The core of the army is the Republican Guard.  The Republican Guard is personally loyal to Saddam Hussein; even made up of some relatives.

The Iraqi air force and navy are practically non-existent.  The navy consists of a few small coastal patrol boats.

Factions within Iraq
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

There are three main factions which make up Iraq.  The Kurds in the north, the Sunnis, who are more centrally located, and the Shia in the south.  The group which controls the nation politically is the Sunnis.  Saddam Hussein is from this group.  The Sunnis and the Shiites are a result of a rupture of Islam into two branches.  The orthodox Sunnis and the breakaway Shia, the followers of Ali and Hussein (not Saddam).  The Shiites are more closely related to the Persians and Iran.

One cannot understand Iraq without factoring the issue of tribalism and the Bedouin culture.  The tribes are fiercely loyal to their own people.

Roots of Iraq

Mesopotamia and Ottoman Empire
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Iraq was not birthed at its roots with its present name.  It was known as part of what history tells us was Mesopotamia.  Various ancient empires affected this area, such as the Medes and Persians.  The most important modern root before the change of name from Mesopotamia to Iraq was the Ottoman empire.

World War I
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

In 1914, the Triple Entente of Britain, France, and Russia squared off against the Triple Alliance of Germany and the empires of the Hapsburgs and the Ottomans. Britain made promises to those who wanted an Arab Empire of, what they felt, was the entire Arabian Peninsula.

This led to the Arab Revolt. Lawrence of Arabia fought in this revolt to help establish an Arab government.

The fate of the Arabs was decided behind closed doors in the Sykes-Picot Agreement in Paris between Britain and France. The British obtained a predominately British Middle East.

British and French mapmakers drew the boundaries of what was to become the Arab states of Lebanon, Syria, and TransJordan. Other lines were drawn to form new nations.  Iraq was one of those. They drew a line around Baghdad and Basra.

Later, at a meeting in Cairo at the Semiramis Hotel, a group gathered by Winston Churchill met. It was this group that formally christened the new British colony, "Iraq."  It is believed to have come out of a lost language meaning "a sunny land" or "flat plains" or "the country of dark color."

The British installed Hashemite King Faisel to the contrived throne. This led to a monarchical Iraq which was doomed to failure from the start as the many factions in this newly contrived nations made strange bedfellows.

The Kurds had been promised an independent state by the British in return for their support against the Ottomans. However, they also promised to give the Arabs their independence. Of course, you cannot give the same land to two people. It was the Kurds who were left out in the cold.

The Assyrian Christians were also promised independence. However, none of them received their independence in the San Remo Conference.

During this time, Arab and Iraqi nationalism continued to grow.  Anti-western feelings continued to grow and burst into open rebellion after the Portsmouth Treaty was signed in 1948. It defined the relationship between Iraq and Britain completely in Britain's favor.

United States
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

U.S. oil companies moved in and took a larger and larger role in the Iraqi oil industry.  With the elections in Iraq in 1954, the Americans took on the British propensity for superpower mistakes.

Later as the U.S. identified more and more with the cause of Zionism and Israel, they were dubbed as "The Great Satan." This increased with the rise of the Israeli state.

The United States, under Eisenhower, gave military aid to Iraq as a safeguard against Communism. Later on we were to see Iraq as a bastion again  fundamentalist Iran.  More on the problems caused by the U.S. in the history of the nation and Saddam Hussein, later.

The Jews and Iraq
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

At one time Jews from the Babylonian captivity settled and stayed in Iraq.  They were accepted into Arab society and assimilated in many ways.  However, when the British expelled the mufti of Jerusalem, Baghdad's Arabs declared war on the Jews.  Over the first two days of June, 1941, the farhoud killed 179 Jews and destroyed millions of dollars of Jewish property. At that time, ten of the twenty-five first class members of the chamber of commerce were Jews.  A March 1950 law was passed permitting any Jew to leave the country with his assets in return for surrendering his Iraqi nationality.  Whole Jewish communities across Iraq vanished without a trace.  In 1952, the six seats in parliament set aside for Jews were cancelled.

The Revolution

The Iraqi army topped the royal regime on July 14th, 1958.  They were led by General Abdul Karim Kassem.

The Baath Party
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

At this time, a new political party arose called Baath party.  Oddly enough, this Renaissance party originated with two Syrians - a Christian and a Sunni Muslim.  It is a mixture of Marxism, 19th century romantic German nationalism, superimposing an Arab character on both.  Aflaq, the supposedly Christian of the two, coined the phrase, "One Arab nation with an eternal mission."  The call was to Arabism over all factions of Islam.  One of its new leaders was none other than a young Saddam Hussein.  General Hussein attempted to assassinate Kassem.  He only wounded him. Later the party succeeded in killing Kassem. This happened in 1963.

There were only 1,000 members of the Baath party at that time.  By 1968 the Arab Revolutionary Movement was overthrown.  Led by Saddam Hussein they took power and held it.

Saddam Hussein

Saddam was born on April 28th, 1937, into a miserably poor peasant family in the village of al-Auja, near Tikrit.  His father died before his birth.  As a child he was an "ibn aziqa," a "son of the alleys" who sold watermelons to passengers on the train.  Later, as he went to live with his uncle, he was infused with radical pan-Arabism.  He became part of the Baathist hit team in 1957 at age 20.  It is said that he developed an obsession with Stalin.  His thuggish power helped pave the way for the Baath's rise to power.  After 1968 he helped shape the party.

The portion of Iraq from which Saddam came, Tikrit, was known for its violence.  It has been said there is no mystery about the way Iraq is run - it's just like they run Tikrit.  The Baath party rose to power through purges, where thousands of people were killed, with thousands more imprisoned.  Later, backed by the Revolutionary Command Council (RCC), Saddam took and kept power.  He did this by imprisoning his relative, al-Bakar, then leader of the Baath party, who was also his relative.  Those who might oppose him were executed.


Enter the United States again. Fearing Iran, the United States saw Iraq as their ally.  Money and weapons, including chemical weapons, were sent to Iraq. In the Iran-Iraq War, it has been said that 1,000,000 Iraqis died. At the end of that time Saddam felt that he did not receive the assistance and respect he felt he and his country deserved.

Operation Desert Storm

At that time Hussein was cash strapped.  He also owed Kuwait $13 million dollars.  He could wipe out a big portion of his debts by taking over Kuwait.  During this time he offered the Shatt al-Arab waterway to the Iranians - the very waterway they had fought over for eight years.  Saddam made a trumped up claim that Kuwait actually belonged to Iraq and they were just taking back what was owed by them.

John Kelly testified before Congress in 1990 on the situation in Iraq and said that the United States had no commitment to defend Kuwait and that the U.S. had no intention of defending Kuwait, if attacked by Iraq.  The same message was given to Hussein in a July 25th meeting in Iraq, by a U.S. representative.

On August 5th, Bush said to the public, "This will not stand, this aggression against Kuwait." By January things had heated up and the U.S. went into an allied battle called Operation Desert Storm, launched January 16th, 1991, to drive Iraq out of Kuwait.  Of course, this really made Hussein mad and he felt betrayed by the United States.  In the end of Desert Storm, only 148 U.S. troops were killed with 458 wounded and 121 killed in non-combat operations.  On the other hand, some estimates indicate that over 100,000 Iraqi soldiers were killed, 300,000 were wounded, and 60,000 were captured.  Bush didn't move into Iraq to take Saddam out, as that was never his objective.  The U.S. hoped that factions from within the country would rise up and remove him from power.  The Shiites in the south did rise up, as did the Kurds in the north.  However, the United States did not factor in the fact that the trained Republican Guard had not even reached the battle in Kuwait.  The war was over too soon for them to arrive there. As a result, they were available to go against the Shiite and Kurdish "rebels" with a massive slaughter.  The United States had left the opposition unprotected by not providing them military cover.

The Kurds

Saddam had previously put down Kurdish rebellions for an independent Kurdistan through the use of brutality and chemical weapons.  By Kurdish accounts, 1,296 villages were destroyed through the use of poison gas.  The "butcher of Baghdad" was up to his old ways - even before the Gulf War.

After the Gulf War, thousands of Kurds became refugees while trying to escape the madman Hussein's rampage.  Only later did the United States realize what we had done and sent relief to the tens of thousands of the refugees.

Iraq today hates the United States and calls it "The Great Satan."  Saddam's successor will most likely be his second son, Qusay, as his eldest son, Uday, is no longer heir apparent.  Rumors swirl that the "Great Leader" suffers from lymphoma cancer.  Those loyal to him from the region of Tikrit, his home region, surround him in government and as the Republican Guard.

One of the main reasons Saddam hates the United States so much is for our stand for Israel.

The people of Iraq have suffered severely under the economic sanctions placed upon them.  Most of these sanctions are blamed on the United States.  The poor have suffered the most with many dying; especially the children.

The army is a major key to purging Iraq of this dictator.  We must pray that the army itself will rise up against Hussein.

If indeed the U.S. and her allies go to war with Hussein, who would fill the leadership vacuum left by the overthrow of Saddam?  It is proposed that the Iraqi National Congress could fill the void until a democratic election could take place.  This would only work with the backing of some kind of U.S. or allied backing. Unless this happens, it is possible that the Christians could be slaughtered by factions of Islamic fundamentalists, who hate them.
