It was refreshing and delightful to find in his portrayal of Deborah, the heroine of the novel, someone both devout to the nth degree and full of balance and common sense. Too many portray radical Christians as foolish and naive. Deborah is neither. Though the book is a story of the redemption of a wilderness and its people after the trauma of major natural disasters and disease, and as such, is full of hope, what strikes home to the heart is that in each of its characters who either are redeemed or die, one can not help experiencing his own sinful nature being brought to repentance. This is especially so in the progressive liberation of John L. Moore's hero, Daniel. In him only the obtuse can fail to see their own duplicity of nature and their own hidden sinfulness. Those who get the point of the book will recognize that they are themselves empty houses, living in a wasteland of empty people - and do something about it. THE INTERIOR: America's once grand Northern Plains is a desperate land, ravaged by earthquakes, contaminated by plagues, and overrun by savage wolves. People no longer inhabit homes that, ghostlike, still dot the plains.
