We lost our offices last September and were displaced to Crystal City, so I was unaware of your visit last month. But keeping in mind God’s promises, I walked through the Pentagon Halls today with a completely different prospective and found myself praying and lifting God up in praise. I agree with you that God’s spirit is present in the Pentagon and I don’t think I will ever look at my place of work in quite the same manner. --------------------------------------------------------- "LITTLE DID I KNOW WHAT TRAGEDY AWAITED US 11 DAYS LATER" --------------------------------------------------------- I assumed my position for my first tour of duty at the Pentagon on September 1st, 2001. Little did I know what tragedy awaited us all, only 11 days later. I work in the Navy’s programming office that tries to bring together the Navy’s military requirements or needs and the reality of a finite financial spending plan. We were busy that morning putting the final touches on a brief that was to be presented to the Chief of Naval Operations. One officer was checking the news on his computer and announced a plane had hit one of the towers in NYC. Then he passed the word that a second plane had hit the other tower and we all stood there in amazement. Someone turned to me and asked if I thought they would try and hit the Pentagon and I thought at that time, "not a chance." --------------------- TWENTY MINUTES LATER --------------------- Twenty minutes later, thousands of lives would be significantly changed, forever. The building shook, lights went out, a thunderous sound erupted, and a large fireball and smoke could be seen just outside the window. People were yelling and the area quickly filled with a thick black smoke, but it was controlled setting and I never sensed a feeling of panic. Hundreds of people filled each of the numerous passageways in the Pentagon and filed out of the building in an orderly fashion. -------------------------------------- "I KNEW GOD'S MERCY FOR ME WAS GREAT" -------------------------------------- You could feel God’s presence and hand guiding the people to safety. The overall mood was quite eerie; I felt angry, sad, confused and scared all at the same time, but I knew God’s mercy for me was great and he comforted me. It took a couple of days for us (my division of 40 personnel) to get back together and we never realized how close the plane had actually come to our office. The point of impact was directly down our corridor, the 4th and a floor or so below. The plane hit the southwest side of the building at a 45-degree angle so it went to the left of our offices instead of directly down our corridor. We set up new offices at the Navy Annex, up the hill from the Pentagon and went to work directly, helping the Navy respond to this action against our country. The work was long hours in cramped spaces, but we knew we had a job to do while others pulled the victims from the rubble. -------------------------------------------------------- GOD WANTED ME TO BRING THE DIVISION TOGETHER FOR PRAYER -------------------------------------------------------- We were all so wrapped up in our job that we didn’t take the time to thank God, as a division, for bringing us out of the building without any loses. I felt God wanting me to take charge and bring the division together for prayer and to lift him up for others that may not have a personal relationship with Christ. Many times, when we are directed by God to do something we ask, “Is that what you really want me to do?” Too often, I am too concerned with how others will look or think of me and I just don’t do anything. Well, I had the opportunity to bring about 15 of us together in prayer during a meeting, but I got scared and didn’t do what I thought God wanted. Afterward I felt so ashamed that I didn’t have the guts to witness to others about the love and mercy in Christ. Well God didn’t give up on me yet and we had our first meeting of the entire division in a small auditorium. It was put together to make sure everyone was OK emotionally and was dealing with the trauma. ------------------------------------- I STOOD UP AND ASKED IF I COULD PRAY ------------------------------------- At the end of the meeting, the Admiral asked if anyone had anything else. I stood up and asked if I could pray for the division and all those that lost loved ones in the Pentagon. You could feel a nervous tension in the air, but the Admiral told me to proceed. I could feel God’s spirit come upon me and noticed a change in my voice; it was bolder and spoken with authority. I praised God for his mercy and grace and asked for his tenderness to touch those who lost their family members, our shipmates. I prayed for God’s wisdom to be given to all those in leadership positions and that their actions would be in God’s will. I was so thankful that God gave me the courage to be his witness. I know that day changed many lives, mine included. I go to work everyday carrying my bible so I can read it on the bus. I spend much more time witnessing to others and praying for God’s will to be done in all our lives. God’s grace and mercy has had a dramatic impact on my life and I pray that my actions will help lead others to know Christ. Thank you again for praying over my Pentagon. With God’s Blessing, LCDR Tim Rudderow email: Rudderow.Tim@hq.navy.mil
