A Season of Light

Rod MyersThis is a new season of invitation – an invitation to "walk in the light, as He is in the light" (1 John 1:7). It is time for a new understanding of the authentic life in Christ, a fresh baptism in the Holy Spirit that will flood every part of your life with His light and bring with it the reward of fellowship with Him and others. Get ready for an increase in revelation as your spiritual eyes begin to truly see Him who is "radiant with light" (Psalm 76:4).

The Light Conversion Experience

I couldn't help but chuckle as I read about Paul's conversion experience on the road to Damascus (Acts 9). He was knocked off his high horse by a blinding flash of light and then clearly heard the voice of Jesus. It is interesting how the hearing improves when the vision is impaired. He remained blind until Ananias laid hands on him and he was filled with the Holy Spirit. Something like scales fell from his eyes, allowing him to see again.

I think these conversion-like experiences happen all the time. I can remember being in one of my first renewal meetings in Kelowna, Canada. John Wimber was speaking, and after the meeting there was an extended ministry time. It was so impacting to just sit and watch Holy Spirit touch people. The favorite phrases used by the ministry team were, "Holy Spirit, come," and, "More, Lord." There was a gentleness and confidence that Holy Spirit would do His work, and I went into a time of personal conversation with the Lord. It went something like this: "Lord, I am such a wounded soldier. I have gone through so much in the institution of the church. Would you come and heal me, and help me to forgive those people?"

A ministry team member came over and asked me if he could pray with me. As he prayed, I felt as if a veil was lifted from my eyes and I had a clear picture of the state of my heart. It wasn't pretty. The woundedness was an excuse to hide behind an offense I had taken, and pride was affecting my relationship with Jesus and others. Like in Paul's case, the light of Jesus had just knocked me off my high horse. I didn't need comfort. I needed to repent. After the tears, the sweetness of God's presence filled my heart as I allowed His light to reach and expose the hidden places. I felt as if I had been born again, again.

The Light Gospel

For a season the latest food fad was to buy everything "light": calorie-wise dressing, diet cola, and low-fat margarine. Then we found out that the artificial sweeteners were much more harmful for us than the real sugar, and butter was the better choice. One study showed that people drinking diet cola gained more weight than if they drank the real cola. In the same way, I think we may have bought into a "light" Gospel, thinking it would be easier to swallow than the real deal.

As I was asking Father about the increase of devastation in Christian families due to strained relationships, sexual addictions and abuse, He started to speak to me about laying down the "light" Gospel and taking up the "Gospel of Light." "But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the Blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin" (1 John 1:7).

Fellowship with one another. That is what is missing, over and over again. The husband who is caught in a pornography addiction and loses the trust of his wife is no longer in fellowship with her. The girl who lives with the shameful secret of being abused by her father has trouble in meaningful relationships – she is lacking fellowship.

Take a look at your most deep, edifying, and healthy relationships. I think you'll agree that the glue that holds you together is a willingness to be honest and authentic. If two people walk in the light together, there is nothing hidden that can come between them. "For you were once in darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible – and everything that is illuminated becomes a light" (Ephesians 5:8-13).

Embracing the Light

I think my wife and I have the most amazing relationship on the planet. We have great fellowship and just love hanging out together. Incidentally, we also work together, so we are together almost 24/7. I think back to a time approximately six years into our marriage when I had one of those "Road to Damascus" experiences, and yes, I had to not-so-gracefully dismount my high horse, humbly repent, embrace my wife, and walk back into the Light. What would have happened if I had dug in my stirrups and galloped off into my own selfish world? I can't even imagine the consequences of choosing to stay in the dark that day.

Sometimes God is merciful and allows dire circumstances to bring us to a place of decision. Perhaps now He is inviting us to enter willingly into a new season of humility and accountability. Fellowship can be restored in any relationship where "anyone who loves their brother and sister lives in the light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble" (1 John 2:10). Let's dismount the horse and lead it humbly into the presence of the Light, where we can embrace one another and enjoy deep and authentic fellowship.
