Jim Wies serves on the XP–CSA team as an editor and project manager for XP Publishing and is an itinerate in prophetic and teaching ministry. In this month's prayer directives, Jim reveals that God has given the Body of Christ many different types of prayer. He defines each type in simple terms and gives the strategic purpose of each. This will truly revolutionize your prayer life.

Kinds of Prayers
(A Study of Scriptures)

Jim Wies

Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority... 1 Timothy 2:1-2

And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests...and always keep on praying for all the saints. Ephesians 6:18

Many people don't even realize there are different kinds of prayer. But according to these verses, God encourages us to utilize various types of prayer. An understanding of the various kinds of prayer will give us a wider range of tools for our walk of intimacy with the Lord, as well as our warfare against the adversary and the advancement of His Kingdom.

Different Types of Prayer Include:

Praise – Thanksgiving – Adoration:

We praise Him because He is worthy. We thank Him because of His goodness. And when we do, we regain our perspective. Praise, thanksgiving and adoration are perfect starting places for all prayer.

Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name. Psalm 100:4

And they worshiped Him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the temple praising and blessing God. Luke 24:52-53

Confession:

Confession is made when we face ourselves and face God with what we find. Confession is the only real solution to guilt and shame. It is admitting to God what He already knows about us.

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9

Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. James 5:16

Surrender/Consecration:

Prayers of surrender and consecration are done by yielding to His Lordship and devoting ourselves to His Kingdom. It is saying, "Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done."

He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, "O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will." Matthew 26:39

Petition/Supplication:

Prayers of petition and supplication are simply asking God for what we need.

Ask, and it will be given to you...how much more will your Father who is in Heaven give good things to those who ask Him! Matthew 7:7, 11

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. Philippians 4:6

...You do not have, because you do not ask. James 4:2

Intercession:

Prayers of petition, but they are on behalf of another rather than yourself.

...Then the LORD saw it, and it displeased Him that there was no justice. He saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor... Isaiah 59:15-16

Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2

Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority... 1 Timothy 2:1-2

Travail:

Prayers of emotion-filled desperation.

During the days of Jesus' life on earth, He offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the One who could save Him from death, and He was heard because of His reverent submission. Hebrews 5:7

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray as we ought, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. Romans 8:26

Praying in the Spirit (in tongues):

Commonly called our "prayer language," praying in tongues prays the perfect will of God plus edifies or builds up the spirit part of our being.

For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. What is the outcome then? I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the mind also; I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the mind also. 1 Corinthians 14:14-15

Spiritual Warfare - Binding and Loosing:

Prayer is also a powerful weapon against our adversary.

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God...praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints. Ephesians 6:12-18

Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in Heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in Heaven. Matthew 18:18

Unified Prayer:

Prayers of agreement have a synergistic affect to bring the power and presence of God into any situation.

Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in Heaven. Matthew 18:19

Prayer with Fasting:

Fasting speeds up the process. It is saying we want God more than food. It is a means of humbling ourselves, which always qualifies us for more grace. Fasting and prayer are like bringing out the heavy artillery when breakthrough seems to be held up.

As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, "Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them." Then, having fasted and prayed, and laid hands on them, they sent them away. Acts 13:2-3

Prayer Directives for the Body of Christ

National

1. Pray that God will raise up the righteous and put down the wicked.

When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; but when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29:2

Economy

1. Pray for the "Goshen Principle" for the people of God, that even in the midst of the disciplines and judgments of God, the people of God will be protected (Exodus 8 & 9).

2. Pray for the "Isaac Principle" for the people of God, that the people of God will sow during times of leanness and reap 100-fold upon their investment (Genesis 26).

3. Pray for the "Prophet's Reward" for the people of God. The "Prophet's Reward" pertains to sowing and reaping, but specifically the KIND of soil you sow into. A farmer knows that the best use of seed is to sow good seed into good soil and at the right season. Sowing good seed into "prophetic" soil at the right time, you can expect something the Scriptures call the "prophet's reward" (Matthew 10:41).

Normally, whatever you sow, you reap. Thus if you sow money, you reap money. If you sow kindness, you reap kindness, etc. But when you sow into a prophetic ministry, you kick something into motion that goes beyond the normal sowing and reaping. In other words, the "prophet's reward" is beyond money and is the things money can't buy (see 2 Kings 4). The Shunammite woman showed hospitality to Elisha in 2 Kings 4. Later her son died and Elisha raised him back from the dead. Having her son raised from the dead was definitely something that money couldn't buy.

Church

1. Pray that the Church will be all it is supposed to be:

- A House of Prayer (Luke 19:46)
- A House of Worship (1 Peter 2:9)
- A Supernatural Church (John 14:12; 1 Corinthians 2:4-5; 1 Corinthians 4:20)
- An Evangelistic Church (Mark 1:17)
- An Equipping Church (Ephesians 4:11-12)
- A Sending Church (Romans 10:14-15)
- A Unified Church (Ephesians 2:19-21; 4:15-16)

2. Pray that a revival of righteousness will break forth in the Church, and that the people of God will humble themselves and pray, seek His face and turn from their wicked ways, that God might heal the land (2 Chronicles 7:14).

Apostolic Prayers for All Who Love Our Lord Jesus Christ

...that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead... Ephesians 1:16-20

...that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height – to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Ephesians 3:16-19

...that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy; giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. Colossians 1:9-12
