The Man Abraham

Abraham is one of the most well known and iconic figures found within the pages of the Bible. Three religions recognize him as a spiritual figure and leader. As Christians, we have respectively given him the epithet "the father of faith." Other than Jesus Himself, Abraham is regarded as the model of pleasing God through faith. His life demonstrated the extra abundance of the blessing and favor of God due to his desire to please God. To have the "blessing of Abraham" upon one's life is to have favor in the natural realm, and an intimate relationship with God in the spiritual realm.

The Promise

The Scriptures make clear to us the primary reason that Christ's sacrifice upon Calvary's Cross took place in John 3:16: "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." Everlasting life, or eternal salvation, is a promise of God for those who receive Christ and live for Him. God has prepared a heavenly habitation for us, where we get to experience His awesome presence and His overwhelming love. The sacrifice of Jesus Christ has made it possible for us to be in right standing with God and receive the inheritance of everlasting nearness to Him.

Many of us don't realize that Christ's sacrifice wasn't just so that we could make it to Heaven; it was also so that the curse of the Law could be removed from our bloodline and life. I believe that part of the agony that Christ endured while upon the Cross was the weight of sin and every curse that was laid upon Him in that moment. It made Him feel so separated from Father God that He lamented, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?" (see Matthew 27:46).

"Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree." (Galatians 3:13)

Praise God with a shout, for He has removed the power of the curse from our life! Receive the breakthrough by faith, in Jesus' name!

Our God is always a God that does things in abundance. Christ's sacrifice not only prepared the way for a heavenly inheritance and freedom from curses, but it gives us access to something very special: "That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith" (Galatians 3:14). Christ's crucifixion gave legal right for all of mankind to receive a blessing previously only reserved for the natural seed of Abraham. (Photo via Piqsels)

An Unusual Instruction

Years ago, when I was pastoring a church, God gave me an unusual instruction during a time of prayer. During this particular period of time, our small church was experiencing a heightened awareness of God and an increase of the move of the Holy Spirit. My wife and I were constantly listening for fresh instructions from the Spirit of God on how to sustain the time of refreshing from the Lord.

During prayer, the Lord spoke to me, "The offering raised at your next church service – sow the entire amount to the nearby synagogue. Also, receive prayer from the rabbi! Ask him to pray the blessing of Abraham over you and your wife."

I was elated and shocked by what God had spoken to me, but I knew that I had heard from Him clearly. That Friday, I informed our church what God had spoken, and told them that as they sowed, to believe by faith for the blessing of Abraham to come upon them as well.

The next day (which was Saturday), my wife and I drove to the nearby synagogue named Bet Haverim ("House of Friends") in Virginia Beach, VA. My wife and I readied ourselves to sow the entire offering into the synagogue and receive prayer. The head rabbi pulled up in his Toyota Camry. We explained to him that during my time of prayer, God had told me to give a special offering and receive prayer.

We kneeled on the concrete, bowed our heads, and lifted up the offering toward him. This act of humility seemed to have embarrassed him somewhat, causing him to blush. He pleaded with us, "No, no, please stand. Please!" But like Jacob, when he wrestled with the angel, I was adamant that I would not get up until he laid hands on us and spoke the blessing of Abraham over us.

"...And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me." (Genesis 32:26)

After receiving a blessing from the rabbi, my wife and I arose feeling empowered and reinvigorated. We walked away full of joy, knowing that we had obeyed God's instructions. During the next few weeks, God visited our ministry with an increase of His presence, financial miracles, and more creative miracles. When you obey God, He always exceeds your expectations!

Revelation, Faith and Obedience

Some may read this story and try to repeat our actions to obtain the blessing of Abraham. However, I must add a caveat. I do not believe that a Believer in Jesus Christ has to find a Jewish leader and ask for a blessing in order to receive the blessing of Abraham. My wife and I were given specific instructions by God that came by revelation during a time of prayer.

The principle here is that the law of faith and obedience to the Word and voice of God is what connected us to increase, blessing, and favor. Abraham was blessed in every area of life because he was intentional and consistent with obeying God's instructions. The same principle applies today. As you stand on the Word of God – that the blessing of Abraham is for you today through the sacrifice of Christ (Galatians 4) – and obey God's voice, favor and grace will find you supernaturally. "By FAITH Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, OBEYED; and he went out, not knowing whither he went." (Hebrews 11:8, emphasis added)

Revelation, faith, and obedience are the three keys that will cause you to inherit the blessing of Abraham. It is for you today! It is important to read your Word and pray daily. This positions you for revelation. It is important to believe what God reveals to you. This causes you to be pleasing to God.

"Now without faith it is impossible to please God..." (Hebrews 11:6). Obedience activates a return harvest. These were the words of Jesus' mother in John 2:5: "Whatsoever He saith unto you, do it."

Prayer

Dear heavenly Father, we thank You for the great example of faith that the father of faith, Abraham, has set forth for us in the Word of God. More importantly, we thank You for the sacrifice of Your holy Son, Jesus Christ, that allows us access to the same blessings that were upon Abraham. Dear Lord, even as Abraham was rich in silver, cattle, servants, and gold (Genesis 13:2), I thank You, heavenly Father, that You are releasing favor that causes supernatural provision and financial increase in my life.

I decree, in Jesus' name, that there is no lack and no deficiency in any area of my life. Also, I release my faith, believing that the work of Jesus Christ upon the Cross has removed every curse from my life. I receive freedom from these curses, and receive the promise of the Holy Spirit through the atonement of Jesus Christ. Father, I celebrate being grafted into the family of God and the blessing of Abraham by faith!
